Daniel Crossley: “SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN is one of the best musical films ever made”
28/03/2012
He stars as Cosmo Brown alongside Adam Cooper, Scarlett Strallen and Katherine Kingsley in the new West End production, which opened last 15th February at the Palace Theatre and is based on the classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film.
Following its critically-acclaimed and sold-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN transferred to London’s Palace Theatre last month, where it has been playing to packed houses, standing ovations and huge critical acclaim.
Based on one of the world’s best-loved films, this show, directed by Jonathan Church stars Adam Cooper as Don Lockwood, Daniel Crossley as Cosmo Brown, Scarlett Strallen as Kathy Selden and Katherine Kingsley as Lina Lamont.
Daniel Crossley’s theatre credits include ME AND MY GIRL and A CHORUS LINE for Sheffield Theatres, ANYTHING GOES and ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’ for the National Theatre, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN for Hull Truck Theatre, HELLO, DOLLY!, ‘As You Like It’, ‘Oh! What a Lovely War’ and ‘Romeo and Juliet’ for Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre and MARY POPPINS on tour in the UK.
Daniel Crossley tells us briefly about his work in SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN and about his musical theatre career.
HOW WOULD YOU ASSESS THESE FIRST WEEKS OF ‘SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’ AT THE PALACE THEATRE SO FAR?
Tiring but wonderful. The show has been going down a storm.
ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE CHICHESTER PRODUCTION AND THE WEST END ONE?
My number “Make Em Laugh” changed completely – it’s bigger and better now.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST OF PLAYING THE PART OF COSMO BROWN?
Hearing the audience laugh – when they do!!
IS IT MUCH EASIER TO CATCH THE AUDIENCE WHEN THEY GO TO SEE A SHOW THEY ALREADY KNOW SO WELL BECAUSE OF THE CINEMA? OR DO YOU HAVE TO FACE THE COMPARISONS BETWEEN THE FILM AND THE STAGE VERSION?
Yes, we have very big shoes to fill.
HOW DO YOU THINK THAT THE DIRECTION OF JONATHAN CHURCH HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THE PIECE?
Jonathan has remained true to the essence of the piece, but also managed to bring something fresh to it.
ONE OF THE MOST ICONIC SCENES OF THE SHOW IS “SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN”. HOW DOES THE AUDIENCE REACT TO THAT NUMBER?
They scream with excitement. They love getting wet.
WHAT WAS YOUR OPINION REGARDING THE FILM ‘SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’ BEFORE TAKING PART IN THE SHOW?
One of the best musical films ever made.
YOU PERFORMED THE ROLE OF BERT IN THE PRODUCTION OF ‘MARY POPPINS’. WHAT DID IT MEAN TO YOU STARRING IN THAT BELOVED SHOW?
I did the UK Tour, not the West End. I absolutely loved it.
YOU HAVE ALSO TAKEN PART OF WEST END PRODUCTIONS OF ‘CATS’, ‘FAME’ AND ‘CHICAGO’ AND OF REGIONAL PRODUCTIONS OF MUSICAL SHOWS SUCH AS ‘A CHORUS LINE’ OR ‘ME AND MY GIRL’. IS THERE ANY PARTICULAR SHOW THAT HAS BEEN MORE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR CAREER OR THAT YOU KEEP BEST MEMORIES ABOUT?
All of them taught me something new and stretched me as an actor.
COULD YOU COMMENT ON ANY OF YOUR FUTURE PROJECTS?
Nothing planned as yet – Watch this space.
